Tribute to SImply Red - Made with C64 sounds only + vocals

Fairground has to be one of the most challenging songs I've done solely for its rhythm.

Another one of my Commodore 64 heroes is Fred Gray. He had a style to his music all to himself in how he used short arpeggios at the note's beginning and how he would wrap the pulse duty cycle around register boundaries to create reverb-esque sounds. Very clever stuff!

His "Mutants" music is a masterpiece. They way he uses his signature burble like arpeggio in only the first ~120ms of a note playing creates a science fiction like atmosphere to this music. He uses the same effect to create other mood settings too but Mutants is just amazing.

I've applied a shade of Mr Fred Gray to this Bitpop rendition of my favourite Simply Red song.

Enjoy,
Gavin

lyrics

Driving down an endless road
Taking friends or moving alone
Pleasure at the fairground on the way
It's always friends that feel so good
Let's make amends like all good men should
Pleasure at the fairground on the way
Walk around, be free and roam
There's always someone leaving alone
Pleasure at the fairground on the way
And I love the thought of coming home to you
Even if I know we can't make it
I love the thought of giving hope to you
Just a little ray of light shining through
Love can bend and breathe alone
Until the end it finds you a home
Don't care what the people may say
It's always friends that feel so good
Let's make amends like all good men should
Pleasure at the fairground on the way
And I love the thought of coming home to you
Even if I know we can't make it
I love the thought of giving hope to you
Just a little ray of light shining through
After all, they say you only live once

Gavin (zer0Page) Graham Brisbane, Australia

I was a demoscene programmer back in the 80s on the Commodore 64 computer. Part of what I did was write a sound player to exploited tricks to make its sound chip to some conceptually far fetched tricks.
Years later, I've revived my musical bent for the C64 but now I combine modern songs with these sounds of one of the greatest sounding computers of any generation.
